Happy New Year! No to Goals, but YES to a System
Here is a neat article I read about goal setting versus practicing a system.
Here's a tidbit taken directly from the article:
The Difference Between Goals and Systems
What’s the difference between goals and systems?
- If you’re a coach, your goal is to win a championship. Your system is what your team does at practice each day.
- If you’re a writer, your goal is to write a book. Your system is the writing schedule that you follow each week.
- If you’re a runner, your goal is to run a marathon. Your system is your training schedule for the month.
- If you’re an entrepreneur, your goal is to build a million dollar business. Your system is your sales and marketing process.
The neat thing about this about this article is that I've been in a system with a goal in mind all along, not realizing that's what I was doing. I have a system in place for my writing, now do I always stick to it? No, I don't. But I noticed when I did NaNoWriMo a couple of months ago, the contest set the overall goal - to write 50,000 words in 30 days. However, I gave myself a subgoal - to write 50k in less time. I completed it in 22 days. But I did it within a system of writing more than 1667 words per day. It worked.
This subgoal helped me to apply this system to other manuscripts I'm in the process of writing. However, it has not turned out as well as I've liked. The holidays have now come and gone and I didn't use the time as I wanted - which was to write. Instead, I spent my time resting and enjoying family/friends. I'm happy with that too. But now I need to buckle down and rework my system to ensure I meet the goal of completing this manuscript. The elation I know I will feel. I'm elated now over the thought of it coming together. But to type THE END, is like nothing else.
The one thing I do realize is that I believe in the system. Goals aren't much if you don't have a tangible plan to get them achieved. SMART Goals are another way of establishing a system.
In the next couple of days, I'm going to go back over the things I wrote for myself at the beginning of 2013. If I didn't accomplish them, I'll roll them over if my life is still wanting for it. But as I normally do, I'm going to write out some things I'd like to accomplish given the growth I've experienced in 2013. And the overall goal is to not necessarily have them completed by December 31, 2014, but to develop a system to have them completed at some point over the course of time. Perhaps by mid 2015. Who knows.
The important piece is that I'm planting the seeds. The system is watering them every day - nourishing it and one day, I'll have a wonderful accomplishment!
My truth for 1.1.2014.
